When it comes to your wedding, you want to make sure everything is done in the best way possible. We understand this completely. After all, it is not like you say I do everyday. This is the love of your life we are talking about, you are entering into wedded bliss, and you want to make sure your special day is recorded and documented properly. You may only pull out the photos every once in awhile after your wedding day, but at least there will be a professional record that you can be very proud of. But, selecting and hiring a wedding photographer can be very tricky. There are a lot of people in the Lansing area who advertise themselves as professional photographers, but that doesn't mean you would want them all to do your wedding. When evaluating potential candidate's, you will want to consider three main traits that will lead you in the direction of the best photographer for you. That is the goal.
Once you have looked at samples of potential photographers and found the ones you really like in terms of quality and style, you will want to make a list of those you wish to interview. During the interview, the first and most important characteristic you will want to pay attention to is the candidate's personality. As you are asking them specific questions about their expertise and what they can do for you in particular, be keen on their likability. It should not take too long for you to come to a conclusion on whether you like this person or not. Is this someone that you feel you could work with? Are they flexible and patient? Do they treat you with respect and would they do the same for my family and guests? Do they seem trustworthy? Obviously, some of these issues will be a gut feeling, but we are asking you to trust that 6th sense that you have. Believe us when we tell you that you don't want to hire a prima donna or someone who is just plain annoying. If you do, your special day will be reduced to suffering and enduring so you can just make it through. And that is not what your wedding day is supposed to be about. You want to hire a photographer that will treat you with the utmost respect and at the same time operate in a friendly and patient manner.
Another element that you will want to pay attention to is the candidate's style. Do they have a good eye for capturing the right things at the right moment? There are a lot of so called photographers out there that can spew out a lot of information about aperture, fstop, and exposure, but can they take a good picture? Some photographers just have a natural talent for creative capturing. Find out how they view a wedding. What does their eye tell them is important? And for your interest, does that coincide with what you want to see? As they are showing you their portfolio material, ask yourself if their work has an artistic flair, are they unique? Do they tell a story when put together? Is there a creative angle to many of them. Some images are going to be your normal standard capture, but are there others that cause you to think, wow, that is really cool. Make sure you notice if there is a nice mixture between posed shots and action shots. Do the subjects look comfortable and natural? At some point, there will be an inner pull towards a certain candidate's work. The one you gravitate towards will be the one your inner being is leaning towards.
The third factor that will help you in your decision is how much a candidate charges. Unless money is no object, you have probably set a budget for each aspect of your wedding including the photographer. If you find a photographer that you absolutely love in every way, we suggest that you try to be a bit flexible on your budget demands. Keep in mind that finding a great fit is extremely important and if the photographer that you really like is not to far off from your budget number, you might want to consider paying a bit more than you intended to. In the end, you will be happier and you can think of it as a wise investment in getting exactly what you want instead of settling for less. One thing you might be able to do in a case like this is ask the photographer if they could throw in the wedding album in to the package. Usually, most wedding photographers are willing to haggle a bit.
We hope this helps you in your search and eventual decision. If you place most of the emphasis on personality, style, and cost, then you can be fairly certain that you will end up with the wedding photographer who will do justice to your amazing day of celebration.
